Substantive: Charter Values in Civil Litigation
This course will survey how recent private law cases have addressed and incorporated Charter values. It will discuss how constitutional norms such as freedom of expression, freedom of association, privacy rights and equality have influenced the development of the law of tort. Particular cases that will be addressed relate to the law of privilege, the tort of defamation, the tort of negligent investigation, the economic torts and the new tort of intrusion upon seclusion.
Professionalism: Duties of Competence for Legal Professionalism
This portion of the course will discuss issues relating to the standard of competence and quality of service among legal professionals, including skills such as legal research and analysis, writing and drafting, advocacy and negotiation, and effective communication, problem solving abilities and practice management.
