Clinical Laboratory Assistant Diploma
A full-time diploma that prepares you to work in a medical laboratory or clinic, combining standard laboratory procedures with the administrative skills used in laboratory settings. Canadian Career Education College (CCEC) delivers the program in English.
Program Overview
You will learn to perform standard medical laboratory tasks, such as collecting and preparing specimens, and the related administrative work, under the supervision of a licensed practitioner.
Occupations toward which the program is directed: medical laboratory assistant, medical laboratory aide, clinical laboratory assistant, phlebotomist, and phlebotomy aide.

Knowledge and Skills
- Obtain appropriate body fluid samples for special testing
- Apply principles of clinical laboratory management
- Histology procedures and normal tissue microanatomy
- Describe and submit gross anatomic features of surgical specimens
- Prepare samples and diagnostic slides for frozen section analysis
- Photograph or digitize gross specimens and microscopic slides
Laboratory Operations
- Follow protocols, generate timely data reports, and meet safety requirements
- Maintain equipment and keep reagents and supplies stocked
- Obtain, review, and provide medical records and clinical data to the pathologist
- Communicate relevant information and concerns to the pathologist clearly and on time
- Work safely, effectively, and efficiently in practice settings

Admission Requirements
Academic Requirement
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or Mature Student Status. See Domestic Admission Requirements and International Admission Requirements.
Mature Student Status
An applicant who does not have an OSSD or equivalent may be admitted as a mature student if the applicant is 18 years of age or older and passes a qualifying test approved by the Superintendent of Career Colleges (Ontario Regulation 415/06, section 19). See Mature Student Status.

Delivery and Enrolment
Domestic Students
Canadian citizens and permanent residents study in class at the Vaughan campus. No internship or placement is required.
International Students
This program is delivered in class only and runs longer than six months, so international students need a valid study permit.
There is no off-campus practicum. Practical skills are assessed through on-campus practicals and assignments.
