What Is Mature Student Status?

• Mature Student Status may be granted to applicants who are 18 years of age or older and do not have a secondary school diploma or proof that their education is equal to a Canadian secondary school diploma.
• The applicant must pass a qualifying test approved by the Superintendent.
• The assessment does not give a Grade 12 equivalency or credits. Results are valid only at CCEC.

The MSA Test

• The MSA test is administered by an independent third party, Can-Am Data Management, using the Wonderlic testing system.
• Qualifying tests accepted by CCEC include CAAT Level 3 and Wonderlic tests (SLE and WBST).
• MSA test fees are separate from the admission processing and LOA fees. See MSA Test Fees and Policy.
• Test results may be provided before the program starts, or when the test is a condition of admission.
• Instead of the MSA test, you may provide a valid Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

Common Questions

How do mature students apply?

The same way as all other applicants. Submit all the credentials you have, including any assessment report. If approved, your offer lists any conditions, which you must meet on or before the program start date.

Do I need the MSA report before my visa application?

The College requires it before the program starts. If you are outside Canada and need a study permit, we recommend including the report with your application. The test can be taken online from anywhere.

Do I need both an ECA and Mature Student Status?

No. You need only one.

Can I take the MSA test even if I have a degree or diploma?

Yes. If your credential cannot be assessed through an ECA for any reason, you may qualify through the MSA test.

What if I cannot provide the report before my program starts?

If circumstances beyond your control prevent it, the College may extend your admission to another available session on written request.

Is there an age limit?

CCEC has no maximum age limit.

Legal Requirement

Students in an approved vocational program at a career college must meet section 19 of Ontario Regulation 415/06: an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or be 18 years of age or older and pass a qualifying test approved by the Superintendent.

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission.
