    ​Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and do not have a high school diploma or GED. It is intended to allow applicants who have not completed high school the opportunity to be considered for admission based on the skills and experience they have acquired since leaving school.

    If a prospective student does not have a grade 12 education certificate which is equivalent to a Canadian secondary school certificate due to any reason, the college will still consider the student for admission to its programs if the student passes a qualifying test that has been approved by the Superintendent (The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Ontario).

    Due to the aging population in North America, and here in Ontario to be specific, and the commitment from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to provide long term care beds in Ontario, there is an increasing demand for trained administrators and managers. This program targets the skills and knowledge necessary for managers and administrators working in this sector, and provides students with an understanding of the long-term care industry.

    This program is ideal for those candidates with an academic background or managerial experience in a related health or business discipline. The competency-based curriculum will prepare you for a challenging, dynamic management career in a recognized sector.

    Employment Opportunities

    This program is offered ideally to those candidates with an academic background or managerial experience in a related health or business discipline. The competency-based curriculum will prepare you for a challenging, dynamic management career in a recognized sector.

    The Long-Term Care Administrator course will also prepare students for roles in administering or managing long-term care facilities. This self-directed course is designed to meet the minimum 100 hours of instruction for programs in long-term care administration or management as set out in the Ontario Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007 (Section 212 & 4(d)).

    Program Details

    Graduates find work as administrators, managers in the healthcare industry (i.e., hospitals, long-term care facilities, community-based agencies, the Ministry of Health, paramedic services, etc.).

    Learning Outcomes
    Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

    • Describe the evolution and funding of long-term care in Canada
    • Explain the status of long-term care today and the issues it faces
    • Describe ethical concerns common to long-term care settings and approaches for dealing with such concerns
    • Identify challenges related to mental health in long-term care
    • Recognize the importance of strategic planning
    • Implement tools and techniques to make quality improvements
    • Use common communication and decision-making models to improve your leadership skills

    • Understand the historical underpinnings of long-term care in Canada and the role of healthcare financing
    • Understand the fundamental tenants of long-term care in Canada
    • Understand current legislation and major issues impacting long-term care delivery in Canada
    • Understand the ethical obligations present in long-term care
    • Understand government regulations regarding family/caregiver applications to the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care 
    • Understand the fundamentals of Ontario legislation regarding workplace health and safety
    • Understand the core competencies of Infection Protection and Control in the healthcare environment
    • Gain a fundamental understanding of the role, function, and scope of the multidisciplinary team
    • Understand the functions of older-adult health and body systems
    • Build a definition of Leadership in Healthcare
    • Understand the role and functions of a healthcare leader
    • Understand the value of teams, their functions, and the application of leadership skills
    • Develop skills and strategies to manage conflicts, make decisions, and solve problems
    • Know the importance of effective communication
    • Develop the knowledge and skills in data acquisition, quality indicators, and measurement to ensure the quality of care in healthcare
