The Modular Learning Model

The Neuro-Care and Responsive Behaviour Documentation program is divided into five modules.


Module 1: Foundations of Neuro-Care & Cognitive Impairment

Focus: Understanding the biological and neurological basis of patient behaviour.

  • Key Topics:

    • Introduction to Neuroanatomy and the Central Nervous System.

    • Overview of common neurological conditions: Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s, and Acquired Brain Injury (ABI).

    • The impact of cognitive impairment on communication and daily functioning.

    • The "Person-Centered" care philosophy in a Canadian context.


Module 2: Understanding & Assessing Responsive Behaviours

Focus: Identifying the "why" behind patient actions to move from reactive to proactive care.

  • Key Topics:

    • Defining "Responsive Behaviours" vs. "Challenging Behaviours."

    • Identifying internal triggers (pain, infection, fear) and external triggers (noise, lighting, environmental stressors).

    • Utilizing clinical assessment frameworks to track patterns.

    • Recognizing non-verbal cues and physiological signs of distress.


Module 3: Advanced Clinical Documentation & Professional Reporting

Focus: The technical mastery of objective, precise, and legally sound medical record-keeping.

  • Key Topics:

    • Principles of Professional Documentation: Objective vs. Subjective charting.

    • ABC Charting (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence) and its role in care planning.

    • Electronic Health Record (EHR) best practices and data accuracy.

    • Incident reporting and documenting the use of redirected interventions.


Module 4: Intervention Strategies & Crisis De-escalation

Focus: Practical, non-pharmacological techniques to ensure safety and maintain dignity.

  • Key Topics:

    • Gentle Persuasive Approaches and non-invasive physical redirections.

    • Verbal de-escalation techniques for high-acuity situations.

    • Environmental modifications to reduce behavioural triggers.

    • Collaborating with families and multidisciplinary teams to implement behavioural care plans.


Module 5: Ethics, Privacy, & Professional Integration in Canada

Focus: Navigating the legal landscape and preparing for the Canadian healthcare workforce.

  • Key Topics:

    • Ontario Healthcare Legislation: PHIPA (Privacy), the Long-Term Care Homes Act, and Patient Rights.

    • Ethical dilemmas in neuro-care: Balancing autonomy with safety.

    • Professionalism and workplace boundaries in home care vs. institutional settings.
