Understanding Canadian Student Visas

CCEC provides letters that support international students with administrative and immigration requirements, such as the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and enrolment letters.

Study Permit Eligibility

According to IRCC, to get a study permit you must:

• be enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI);
• show you have enough money to pay tuition, living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you, and return transportation;
• obey the law, have no criminal record, and provide a police certificate if required;
• be in good health and have a medical exam if required; and
• prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.

Visas and Permits

• If you apply for your first study permit from outside Canada and you need a TRV, IRCC issues the TRV when your study permit is approved. You do not submit a separate TRV application.
• Programs of six months or less do not need a study permit, but you still need a valid passport and a TRV or eTA.

Bringing a Spouse or Children

• Your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children may apply to come to Canada with you. They can apply at the same time as you, or after your study permit is approved.
• Include all accompanying family members in your study permit application.
• Open work permits for spouses and partners of international students are now limited to certain programs set by IRCC. Most college diploma programs do not qualify. Check current rules on the IRCC website before you apply.

Working While You Study

You may be able to work without a work permit if your study permit includes work conditions and you meet IRCC requirements.
